PVC Scrap Recycling: Rigid vs Flexible PVC, K-Value and Cable Scrap

PlasticSetu sourcing desk · 15 Oct 2026 · 5 min read · PVC recycling · K-value · cable scrap

PVC is recycled in large volumes in India, mainly from pipes, profiles, cable insulation, footwear and flexible sheeting. But PVC behaves differently from PP and PE. It comes in rigid and flexible forms that cannot simply be mixed, it is sensitive to heat, and a little of it in the wrong stream can ruin another material.

This guide is for both buyers and sellers of PVC scrap. It explains the main types, the specifications that matter, and the handling rules that keep PVC lots saleable.

Rigid vs flexible PVC

TypeTypical sourcesTypical recycled uses
Rigid (unplasticised)Pipes, fittings, window and door profiles, rigid sheetNon-pressure pipes, conduits, profiles
Flexible (plasticised)Cable insulation, hoses, footwear, flooring, sheetingFootwear soles, mats, hoses, cable compounds

The difference is plasticiser. Flexible PVC contains plasticisers that make it soft; rigid PVC has little or none. Mixing them produces material that is neither properly rigid nor properly flexible, so sellers should keep them separate and buyers should state which one they need. For an overview see PVC.

K-value and why it matters

K-value is a measure of the molecular weight of the PVC resin. Higher K-value resins are typically used in rigid pipes and products that need strength, while lower K-value resins are often used where easier flow is needed. MFI is not commonly used for PVC; K-value, along with hardness for flexible grades, is the usual way to describe it.

For recycled PVC, the K-value of the original product is often unknown, but knowing the source helps. Pipe scrap usually comes from a resin suited to extrusion. If you need a specific range, agree it with your supplier and test a sample. For flexible grades, Shore hardness is often a more practical check.

Cable scrap and copper residue

PVC cable scrap is the insulation and sheathing left after copper or aluminium is recovered. It is a large stream, but quality varies with how well the metal was removed.

  • Fine copper strands and dust left in the PVC can block screens and damage equipment, and they show up as specks in products.
  • Ask sellers how the metal was separated and whether the material has passed through a separation step after granulation.
  • Cable scrap is usually flexible and comes in many colours; mixed colour lots normally end up as black or dark compounds.

Sellers can command better interest by stating metal content honestly and offering a sample.

Heat sensitivity and stabilisers

PVC degrades when overheated or held in the barrel too long. It discolours, releases hydrochloric acid and can corrode equipment. Recycled PVC has already been processed at least once, so some of its original heat stabiliser may have been used up.

  • Processors often add fresh stabiliser when reprocessing recycled PVC; the type and amount depend on the product.
  • Avoid long residence times and high temperatures. Purge equipment properly when switching to or from PVC.
  • Store PVC scrap away from direct sunlight for long periods, as UV exposure also degrades it.

Keep PVC away from PET and PE streams

This is one of the most important rules in plastic recycling. PVC melts and degrades at temperatures well below what PET needs, so even a small amount of PVC in a PET lot burns, turns black and releases acid during processing. It also causes defects in PE and PP. Many PET and polyolefin buyers will reject a lot entirely if PVC is found.

PVC is denser than water, as is PET, so a float-sink tank will not separate them from each other. Separation needs careful sorting at source, or specialised equipment. Look for resin identification code 3 on rigid items, and train sorting staff to recognise PVC bottles, blister packs and labels. See our PET bottle recycling guide for more on this.

Specifying and listing PVC scrap

For buyers, a clear requirement mentions rigid or flexible, source (pipe, profile, cable, footwear), form (scrap, regrind or recycled PVC granules), colour, metal content limit for cable scrap, and K-value or hardness if relevant. Buyers can get quotes from verified suppliers through PlasticSetu's sourcing desk, which also arranges samples and tracks dispatch.

For sellers, list rigid and flexible separately and describe source, colour and any metal or other contamination honestly. Sellers of PVC pipe scrap and cable scrap can list your materials; listings stay private between you and the desk until a matching requirement comes in.
