How to Sell Plastic Scrap Online in India: A Practical Guide

Selling plastic scrap used to mean waiting for the same few traders to visit your yard and accepting whatever rate they offered. Today more recyclers, aggregators and factories with surplus scrap are reaching manufacturers directly through online sourcing channels. The material has not changed, but the way buyers judge it has: they now decide from photos, specifications and documents before anyone travels to inspect a lot.
This guide covers what to do before you list, how to describe your material so serious buyers respond, and how to protect yourself on payment and dispatch.
Sort and segregate before you sell
Mixed scrap sells slowly and at a discount because the buyer has to do the sorting. The single biggest improvement most sellers can make is to separate material by polymer, form and colour before listing.
- By polymer: keep PP, HDPE, LDPE, PET and PVC apart. Even a small amount of PVC in a PET lot can make it unusable for many buyers.
- By form: lumps, purgings, film, rigid parts, bottles and fibres go to different processes and different buyers.
- By colour: natural and white material usually has a wider buyer base than mixed colours. Keep black separate.
- By source: post-industrial scrap from a single process is easier to sell than post-consumer material of unknown origin.
If you are unsure of the polymer, read our guide on how to identify plastic types and get a sample tested rather than guessing.
Grade your material honestly
Buyers compare lots on a few basic points. Describe each one clearly:
- Form: scrap, regrind, flakes, agglomerate or granules. If you are unsure of the difference, see scrap vs regrind vs granules.
- Source and application: for example raffia bags, crates, pipes, film, bottles or injection moulded parts.
- Colour: natural, white, single colour or mixed.
- Contamination: labels, paper, metal, sand, oil, other polymers or moisture.
- Washed or unwashed, and whether the material has been through float-sink separation.
- Test values if available: MFI, density, ash content and moisture. A report from a lab carries more weight than a figure written from memory.
Overstating quality is the fastest way to lose a buyer. A lot described as clean that arrives with paper and sand will lead to a rejection, a dispute over freight and a buyer who will not come back.
Take photos and write specs that sell
Good photos save you many phone calls. Take them in daylight, against a plain background, and show:
- the full lot or stack of bags, so the buyer understands the volume;
- a close-up of a handful of material, so colour and particle size are visible;
- any visible contamination, honestly;
- the packing, such as jumbo bags, woven bags or bales.
Then write a short specification: polymer, form, colour, source, approximate quantity in MT, monthly availability if it is a regular stream, location, packing and test values. Mention whether you can supply a sample. Buyers filter quickly, and a complete listing gets answered before an incomplete one.
Pack and prepare for dispatch
Packing affects both freight cost and the condition of material on arrival. Regrind, flakes and granules are usually packed in woven bags or jumbo bags; film and bottles are typically baled. Keep packing consistent within a lot, label bags with the lot reference, and store material under cover so it does not pick up water or dust.
Before dispatch, agree on who arranges the truck, how the material will be weighed, and which documents travel with it. A proper GST tax invoice and, where applicable, an e-way bill are expected; your accountant can confirm the specifics for your case.
Find buyers and keep payment safe
Buyers for plastic scrap include recyclers who wash and pelletise, compounders, and manufacturers who use regrind or granules directly in moulding, extrusion or film blowing. You can reach them through industry contacts, trade associations, local markets in recycling clusters and online sourcing desks.
Whoever the buyer is, protect yourself on payment:
- Agree the price basis in writing: ex-works or delivered, per kg or per MT, with or without GST.
- Agree how quality will be judged on arrival and what happens if the buyer is unhappy. A pre-dispatch sample approved by the buyer reduces disputes.
- With new buyers, ask for advance payment, or part-advance with the balance before unloading. Extend credit only once there is a track record.
- Agree the weighbridge in advance and keep the weighment slip.
- Keep photos of the loaded truck and the sealed bags.
Be cautious of buyers who agree to any price without asking about quality, or who press you to dispatch before payment terms are settled.
Selling through PlasticSetu
PlasticSetu runs a sourcing desk for manufacturers who buy recycled plastic raw materials. When you list your material, the listing is visible only to you and the desk. When a buyer requirement matches your polymer, form and location, the desk contacts you for a quotation and, if needed, a sample, and then tracks dispatch and delivery. Read the sell plastic scrap page to see how it works, then list your materials with the specs and photos described above.
